Visit from a Kazakh Expert: Special Focus on Computed Tomography Application

On June 5, a forensic expert from Kazakhstan, Gazim Smagulov, along with Professor Dainius Haroldas Pauža from the Anatomy Institute of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), visited the State Forensic Medicine Service (SFMS). The purpose of the meeting was to present the forensic medicine system of the Republic of Lithuania and to introduce the computed tomography (CT) examination method used within institution.

Mr. Smagulov arrived in Lithuania for a two-week internship. One of the key goals of his visit was to familiarize himself with the activities of the SFMS – particularly the application of computed tomography in forensic examinations and the relevant legal framework in Lithuania. The guest visited the autopsy unit of the Vilnius division, where the head Ovidijus Petkelis presented the facilities and equipment dedicated to CT examinations.

The Kazakh expert expressed particular interest in the protocols and practices of computed tomography examinations applied in Lithuania. As the guest noted, the forensic medicine system in Kazakhstan is currently undergoing large-scale reforms and plans to implement computed tomography examinations with the aim of performing "virtopsies" in the future – post-mortem examinations of deceased bodies using only computed tomography without an autopsy. Jolanta Majauskaitė-Čobot, a forensic medical expert and radiologist at the Vilnius division, presented the equipment used, the examination procedure, and other key aspects. In Lithuania, computed tomography is currently used as a supplementary tool to determine the precise localization and morphology of injuries, but it does not replace a full autopsy.

International and inter-institutional visits provide valuable opportunities to share experiences and discuss potential areas of cooperation in the field of forensic medicine, especially in improving the implementation and adaptation of innovative research methods.
