Visit to Riga: SFMS Delegation Familiarizes with Latvian Forensic Medical Practice

On March 24–25, 2026, a delegation from the State Forensic Medicine Service (SFMS) paid an official experience exchange visit to the State Centre for Forensic Medical Examination of the Republic of Latvia (VTMEC) in Riga. The aim of this visit was to strengthen bilateral cooperation, get acquainted with the working methods of Latvian colleagues, and discuss current challenges in the field of forensic medicine.

The SFMS was represented by: Director Valdemaras Sviackevičius, Deputy Director for Expertise Rimantas Laurinavičius, Head of the Forensic Science (Criminalistics) Laboratory Dr. Giedrius Kisielius, and forensic medical expert Paulius Mankevičius.

Intensive Experience Exchange Programme

On the first day of the visit, the Acting Director of the Latvian VTMEC, Dr. Inga Martinova, and department heads presented the renovated premises of the center, the institutional structure, and main areas of activity. The SFMS representatives had the opportunity to learn in detail about:

  • The activities, methods, and challenges of the Thanatology and Clinical Forensic Medicine departments.
  • The work of the Laboratory of Medical Criminalistics, including sample processing and storage techniques.
  • Specialized examinations: presentations on X-ray fluorescence analysis and biochemical analysis during forensic autopsies. Latvian colleagues also introduced the SFMS representatives to the specifics of examining injuries inflicted by uncommon weapons (e.g., crossbows, swords, or tasers).
  • Examination of skeletal remains: experts from the neighboring country shared their experience by analyzing rare practical cases.

The second day of the visit was dedicated to discussions and round-table talks. Experts and representatives from both countries exchanged insights on forensic medicine issues and shared their experiences from the visit.

Discussion on Cooperation Between the Two Countries

"We are confident that this visit will further enhance collaboration between our services and contribute to the continued development of forensic medicine science and practice in both Lithuania and Latvia," stated the leadership of the Latvian VTMEC.

This meeting is part of a continuous strengthening of the partnership between Lithuanian and Latvian forensic medical institutions, helping to ensure the highest quality of expert examinations and a consistent exchange of practical experience in the region.
