State Forensic Medicine Service Strengthens International Ties: Italian Forensic Expert's Internship
The State Forensic Medicine Servicehosted Dr. Giulia Bambagiotti, a promising fourth-year forensic medicine resident and PhD student specializing in forensic medicine and forensic toxicology from the Politecnica delle Marche University in Ancona, Italy, for an internship in Lithuania on May 6-24, 2025.
Broad Spectrum of Insights and Practical Experience
This international experience exchange initiative is part of a broader forensic medicine international internship program, aimed at deepening professional knowledge, fostering the growth of specialists, and strengthening international scientific collaboration.
During her internship, Dr. Bambagiotti gained valuable experience by delving into the Lithuanian forensic medicine system and actively engaging in VTMT's daily activities. Her program covered a wide range of areas: from a detailed introduction to autopsy methodologies in the forensic pathology department to participation in examinations of living individuals for injuries and sexual assault cases within the clinical forensic medicine practice.
The resident also observed the processes of detecting narcotic and toxic substances in the forensic toxicology laboratory, explored the intricacies of tissue examination under a microscope in forensic histology, analyzed the latest methods in forensic criminology related to physical evidence and injury identification, and familiarized herself with identity and kinship investigations conducted in forensic genetics and serology laboratories, as well as human remains analysis in the field of forensic anthropology.
Sharing Italian Experience and Outlining Paths for Cooperation
A significant highlight of the internship was Giulia Bambagiotti's presentation to the VTMT expert community on "Forensic Medical Expertise and Scientific Activity at the Polytechnic University of Marche (Ancona, Italy): Experiences and Opportunities for Collaboration". During her presentation, Dr. Bambagiotti introduced the specifics of Italian forensic medicine practice, shared insights into scientific research conducted in her home country and proposed concrete avenues for cooperation with Lithuanian specialists.

The State Forensic Medicine Service actively develops international relations, demonstrating a commitment to international cooperation and contributing to the advancement of scientific research and encouraging the exchange of young professionals. Such initiatives not only develop individual professional skills but also lay a strong foundation for long-term scientific and collaborative ties between countries.
