Implementing New Technology in VTMT’s Forensic Work: Training in France
From May 5 to 7, 2025, experts from the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Laboratory of the State Forensic Medicine Service (VTMT) participated in a training course in France, organized by the HORIBA Scientific Sales & Marketing Division. During the training, they deepened their theoretical and practical knowledge of micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometric (µXRF) analysis using VTMT’s newly acquired instrument – the Horiba XGT-9000 Pro.
The training was led by HORIBA engineer Dr. Hssen Fares and product specialists Celia Olivero and Dr. James O'Donnell. It provided essential skills for the installation and operation of the new equipment in the Forensic Medicine Laboratory.
The Horiba XGT-9000 Pro will be used to analyze metals and other chemical elements in injury traces and examine the tools that caused the trauma. Metal trace analysis helps differentiate between injuries and, in the case of gunshot wounds, identify the composition of projectiles. When combined with other indicators (e.g., gunpowder residue), it enables the estimation of shooting distance. Annually, the laboratory investigates around 10–15 gunshot injury cases and examines about 50 objects. Elemental analysis is also used to identify tools by comparing their composition with traces found in injuries.
This new equipment will expand the laboratory’s capabilities in identifying damaging tools and conducting more detailed gunshot wound investigations, resulting in higher accuracy and reliability.
The knowledge gained and professional connections established with HORIBA specialists will support the continued advancement of VTMT’s work and the integration of innovative forensic methods into practice.
