Internship of a Japanese Student at the State Forensic Medicine Service

From March 31 to April 25, 2025, Yuna Koizumi, a student at the School of Medicine of the International University of Health and Welfare (Narita, Chiba Prefecture, Japan), completed a four-week internship at the State Forensic Medicine Service (SFMS) in Vilnius, Lithuania. The internship took place at the central office of the SFMS, located at Didlaukio g. 86E.

The aim of the internship was to familiarize the student with the forensic medicine infrastructure in Lithuania, the specifics of forensic examinations, and the process of preparing expert conclusions. During the internship, Ms. Koizumi observed post-mortem and living person examinations conducted at the Vilnius Department and visited various laboratories of the SFMS, where she was introduced to a wide range of forensic investigations, the equipment used, and innovative examination methods.

Key aspects of forensic expert practice were discussed during the internship, including directions of forensic investigations, interpretation of findings, professional ethics and practical issues, as well as current trends in the field. The hands-on training covered the following areas: forensic pathology (autopsy), clinical forensic medicine, forensic toxicology, forensic histology, medical criminalistics, forensic genetics and serology, and forensic anthropology.

The internship was organized following an official request submitted by Prof. Dr. Daisuke Yajima of the Department of Forensic Medicine at the School of Medicine, International University of Health and Welfare.

We are pleased to have had the opportunity to share our experience and contribute to the professional development of a future medical specialist. We wish Yuna Koizumi continued success in her academic and professional endeavors.
